Boris Johnson has been told that next month’s reopening risks putting Britain back where it was in early March as his scientific advisers prepared people for the return of restrictions if cases rise.

The Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) has significant “concern” about whether all pupils can return to schools in September given plans for restarting the economy, amid dissatisfaction that hospitality has been prioritised over education.

Chris Whitty, the chief medical officer for England, suggested that social distancing measures would be in place at least until next spring, saying that the government’s changes were “absolutely not” risk-free but would “allow us to operate in a reasonably normal way for a prolonged period”.
