Bus and train limits ‘will put 1m more cars on road’

Britain’s streets could be swamped by one million extra cars during the rush hour because of limits on the use of public transport, according to research.

A study published today said that restrictions on bus and rail access to promote social distancing could have alarming implications, with more commuters choosing to drive when the lockdown is eased.

Academics said that the rise in driving for work would increase congestion, air pollution, carbon emissions and road accidents while leading to a drop in physical activity.
