The NHS will need to carry out the biggest flu immunisation programme yet this winter amid concerns about a second wave of coronavirus, the organisation’s chief executive has warned.

Sir Simon Stevens told The Andrew Marr Show on BBC One that it was “entirely possible” that there could be another surge in coronavirus cases in the winter and that a vaccine may not be available in time.

The health service is particularly concerned about the impact of a second wave as the symptoms for flu are “interchangeable” with those of coronavirus.

Ministers are considering giving the flu jab to everyone over 50 to reduce pressure on services.

There have been reports of a row between Mr Stevens and Rishi Sunak, the chancellor, over demands by
