Spain’s battle to combat a recent surge in virus showed no sign of diminishing this weekend with fresh restrictions on the country’s nightlife and intensified local lockdowns.

Over the last 24 hours, Britain has reimposed an obligatory quarantine for travellers returning from Spain, with the Foreign Office advising against all but essential travel to mainland Spain.

The incidence of virus cases in Spain has tripled in the last fortnight, from 8.8 cases per 100,000 on July 3 to 27.4 per 100,000.
